Our Focus

Today, our singular focus is to raise enough funds so that we can electrify the school and ship the computers.  We have collected over 120 computers now ready to be shipped.  However, without power in the school, the computers would not be put to good use.  So we are still continuing to ask our friends, families and everybody we know to help us reach that goal.

We believe that having access to the internet and online learning resources will help the students close the gap that exists right now.

Support Zorat

Thanks to our supporters, Zorat Elementary School is one step closer to getting electrified.  We have now raised $12,000 as of April 2013.  We feel blessed to have your support and we know you will take us all the way to $20,000.  Give the gift of education.

School kids in Ethiopia receive life changing support from Fredericton

A recent trip to Ethiopia has changed our lives for the better.  We had been planning to visit family members in the Northern Province of Tigrai, near the town of Axum. Just a few days before we took off, I had a meeting with a friend.  His name is Mike Washburn.  Mike and I have known each other for a little over a year and in the course of that time, I have learned a great deal from him.  We regularly meet on Mondays to discuss business and some times have coffee.  However, this particular meeting that we had became far more extraordinary.  Upon telling Mike of our planned trip and what we wanted to do when we got there, Mike spontaneously took his cheque book out and wrote an amount that became the start of something special.  You see, we had been planning to visit my old elementary school in Ethiopia and we wanted to take a few things that would help some needy students.  When I expressed to Mike how I wanted to get soccer jerseys for the school team, Mike provided the money we needed and the motivation to do more.  Thank you Mike.

The generosity of people did not stop with Mike.  I returned to the office with a big smile on my face. I was unable to contain my excitement and began sharing what had just taken place at Mike's office.  The first person I shared this news with was another long time friend and colleague, Adam Jardine who is a mortgage broker with Estate Mortgage Inc.  Once again, without hesitation, Adam pulled a large bill out of his pocket and put in a donation.  By this time, I was so exited, I had called my girlfriend at the time, now my fiance, Katherine and shared the good news.  Katherine's mom and her sister who is a teacher had already donated several things for us to take on the trip.

By this time, I felt compelled to ask more people for additional donations so that we could do more while we were in Ethiopia. I then approached Andree McLean, President of Estate Financial Inc. and her partner in the business, Joe Daley.  Andree and Joe did not disappoint us either.  They generously donated.  Here is what we were able to do with the money we received from our donors:

  • 16 soccer uniforms, two soccer ball and 2 volleyballs.
  • 16 boxes of crayons, 308 pencils and 3 pencil sharpeners.
  • 23 students that were orphans or half orphans received new school uniforms.
  • 10 combined desk that seat 3 students per desk - enough for 30 students that were previously sitting on rocks.

Thank you to our donors and supporters.  The school has asked us to continue our support and we have pledged that we will do our best.

Recently, a family donated $365.00 to Zorat.org.  This is the third time this family has done it.  We are so grateful for their continued support.  Thank you very much.  When ever we visit them around Halloween, they gave us their donation on a brown bag.  They save $1/day for the year just for zorat.  $1/day seems very small and easy to do but it goes a long way for our cause.

We hope there will be more people who can do the same as this family.

In three years, we have done several projects for the school. We have achieved our goal of having all students a chair and a desk, we have provided funding for uniforms for kids that are Orphaned and we have bought 570 books! Now the Tigrai government has promised us that they will electrify the school.

Our effort will now focus on finding computers loaded with free educational software that can be used by the students. We are looking at logisitics of how many and when we will begin to collect computers.  We look forward to your continued support.
